Make a Plan.

Museums need to make attainable plans and take actual steps towards fighting racism and acknowledging the institutionalized racism within their own museum. This can be seen with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s apology and acknowledgment of institutionalized racism and colonialism, after their first statement regarding the Black Lives Matter movement where they said, “By valuing diversity as a core strength and listening to multiple viewpoints, we are better able to understand the world around us. We hold these same values for our mission as an encyclopedic museum, as well”. (Weisst) The Metropolitan Museum of Art received backlash from this, as many people pointed out that the Metropolitan Museum of Art itself has institutionalized racism and colonialism within it. Their apology to these comments acknowledged the systemic racism within their institution, followed by a very comprehensive 13 step plan on how they will fix it, including the budget. In this plan, they included steps such as “implement a $3–5 million fund to support initiatives, exhibitions, and acquisitions in the area of diverse art histories.” (Weiss)
